Weekend update

What a great weekend! Friday night Keeper Boy had a sleepover at our Godson's house, and Hubby, J-Mav, and I went to Red Robin for dinner (J-Mav's choice). Hubby and I were rewarded for agreeing to the choice when we discovered the gingerbread shakes have arrived!! Score!! After dinner, we came home and watched the Caps game while hovered around Hubby's laptop since it was broadcast on CSN+ and we don't get that channel. :-(

Saturday I ventured out shopping with BFF. She was so good to me... dropping me off at the front door of The Cheesecake Factory and other various stores, and walking real slow wherever we went. Luckily we brought along a pair of crutches so I could still walk "normally" but not put my full weight on Frankenfoot. I think that helped A LOT because I lasted almost five hours!! We had a great afternoon.

By the time we got back to her house, Hubby and J-Mav were there (and Keeper Boy had been there for the sleepover). We all hung out and had dinner and watched the Caps game. J-Mav was going to have a sleepover on Saturday night, but decided he didn't want to stay. So we all came home after the Caps game was over.

This morning, Keeper Boy had a game against his old team. He was in net and they got pummeled. He was pulled part-way through the first period -- a first for him. The coach told him to get himself together because he was going back in at the beginning of the second period. He did and he played much better for the last two periods; however, you'd not know it by the final score. He was still beating himself up over some of the goals well after he went to bed, as he came downstairs to discuss them with me. Sigh.

Hubby did the grocery shopping again this week. I think I'll be able to resume that duty next weekend. :) After putting the groceries away, Hubby went into the office for a few hours. The boys played outside; I sat on the sofa and watched football. I grilled out for dinner. It was too gorgeous not to. Hubby had a hockey game tonight; I had my Sunday night shows to watch. Now, it's bedtime.

Great weekend!! Next weekend: J-Mav and I are headed to PA to see my niece's school production of The Wizard of Oz.

Weekend update...

Soccer! Hockey! Uncle Hooter! Huh?

Hubby's little brother acquired the nickname "Hooter" many years ago. I won't go into the whole story, but it's a funny one. :-) Anyway, he had to report back to Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) on Friday for a follow-up on his surgery last month. He checked in and proceeded to journey over to our house for the weekend. Needless to say, the boys were THRILLED!

But before the weekend of sports, we put Uncle Hooter to work. He and Hubby assembled J-Mav's new bed... the bed that came with the enourmously-less-than-helpful instructions... the bed we tried to assemble LAST weekend and couldn't even figure out where to start. Frustrating to say the least. Anyway, Hubby and Uncle Hooter figured it out and built a beautiful new bed for J-Mav. Yay! One step closer to the completion of the room makeover. :-)

Next on the agenda was J-Mav's soccer game. Due to it being a Jewish holiday, our roster was quite short. Of our 11 players, we had only six. But we made due and Uncle Hooter got a kick out of watching J-Mav play. J-Mav, knowing that Uncle Hooter played soccer all the up through college, even asked for some tips and pointers (and listened when they were given to him)!

From the soccer the field, we went directly to the hockey rink. Uncle Hooter, J-Mav, and I were able to partake in the organization's annual picnic prior to going inside to see Keeper Boy's team play. They were playing a team from Ashburn for which a few of Justin's former teammates play this year. It wasn't Keeper Boy's turn in the rotation, so he got to keep stats and watch, and I got to sit and talk to friends we hadn't seen in awhile. Keeper Boy's team won.

After the game we went to dinner with great friends (the family of one of the kids on the opposing hockey team) and had a fabulous time catching up while watching VA Tech win a great football game. Good times.

This morning Keeper Boy had hockey practice at 6am! Yeah, I didn't go. Neither did Uncle Hooter. Nor did J-Mav. There was some Rock Band competition, some chores, and some lunch. Then we all trekked up to Frederick, MD for another hockey game. Keeper Boy was in net and had a really good game! The whole team played awesome... for the first two periods. Then I think the 6am practice kicked in. There was a lot of standing around and not a lot of skating. We ended up losing by one goal that was scored in the last few minutes of the game. Kind of a heart breaker.

Went to dinner after the game (thanks, Uncle Hooter!) and then Uncle Hooter headed back to WRAMC and we headed home. The kids are in bed, Hubby has gone off to play hockey (his third rink of the day), and I am flipping between the Emmy Awards and the football game. Neither are really holding my interest.

We're all looking forward to having Uncle Hooter back with us next weekend!

Weekend...

What a great weekend!! The weather was amazing, it was opening day for CYA baseball, and we got together with not one, but two great family friends! Who could ask for more?

Keeper Boy has try-outs tonight and Wednesday night for the spring travel hockey team. So Friday evening, Hubby took Keeper Boy out to the rink for a stick-n-shoot to get in some ice time. He hasn't really been on the ice much in the past month. Hubby, however, forgot his own skates. So instead of being out on the ice working with Keeper Boy, he watched from the other side of the glass and talked to one of his friends who had also brought his kid out. J-Mav and I hung out at home.

Saturday morning was the opening ceremonies for CYA Spring Baseball. It's always fun to see the kids parade onto the baseball field, but then the ceremony part is pretty long and drawn out. 90+ minutes after it started, we got outta there. We ran a few errands (chief among which was getting Justin a BLACK baseball belt, because the other two colors he already has won't work with this year's uniform) and grabbed lunch before heading to the field for J-Mav's 12:00 game... his first ever baseball game!

J-Mav is playing in the Coach Pitch League. That means, the coach pitches to the kids. Each kid gets five pitches and if he or she doesn't make contact with the ball, the T is brought out. Everyone plays in the outfield, and the kids bat in numerical jersey order. They play three innings. It was a challenge to fit those three innings into the 90-minute time allotment. It's largely a teaching situation, and it was fun to watch. J-Mav was up to bat four times, I think. He hit twice on pitches and twice off the tee. He even made it around and scored a run one time! No score is kept in this league. It's all about kicking dirt if you're in the infield, inspecting grass if you're in the outfield, and what's for snack after the game!

Keeper Boy had his first game at 2:30 at a different field, about a mile down the road. He's playing in the AAA League. They DO keep score, they CAN steal bases, they DON'T have snack, and the last inning is unlimited runs (all other innings there's a five run "mercy" rule). Keeper Boy mostly plays first base or catcher, though they have him in the pitching rotation this season, too. He did pitch part of the last inning on Saturday. The coach asked if I could keep the score book. I told him I'd be willing to try but that I hadn't attempted to keep a score book since I was about Keeper Boy's age -- and that was in the program at Phillies games! But I got the hang of it. I told him I'd keep the job if he thought I did okay. Guess I'll find out tomorrow night if Keeper Boy's game isn't rained out. (Right now I'm thinking of scouring the Internet for some ark plans.) Oh, and Keeper Boy's team won. I think the final was 6-4 or 6-3.

Saturday evening we got together with friends -- someone I've been friends with probably since before I even went to Kindergarten (with a too-long falling out at the end of/after high school that remains, to this day, one of the only major regrets in my life)... and her hubby and three kids. They moved to a new house almost two years ago and -- while we talk on the phone and over email and Facebook -- we'd never seen it, even though it's only 20 minutes away from our house! With five active kids between us, scheduling is an issue. Anyway, the house is beautiful, dinner was great, and we had an excellent time catching up and hanging out. The kids all get along great and we promised we wouldn't wait that long to get together again. Now we have to make good on that plan!

Sunday was about house and yard work... and hockey. Hubby mowed the lawn for the first time this year. I took care of the inside stuff. The kids did their chores and finished their homework. Then Hubby took Keeper Boy to the rink for another stick-n-shoot session (and remembered his skates this time) and J-Mav went to play at a friend's house for a few hours. Though what I really wanted to do with all that quiet time was take a nap, I finished the vacuuming and laundry and marinated some chicken for dinner. When everyone got home, we headed to BFF's house for another great evening of hanging out. We supplied chicken and brats for the grill and BFF and BFF's hubby supplied all the sides and dessert. It was a fun evening, as always, and the kids all get along like siblings because they've known each other all of their young lives. During our visit, I discovered that my goddaughter has a sophisticated new hairdo that makes her look older than her six years, and my godson has his first official girlfriend... long distance. Her grandmother lives down the street from their house. She actually lives three hours away. Everyone's growin' up!

On our way home, we saw a large police/fire response presence by J-Mav's school. We didn't know what was going on as we didn't see a fire or anything. I emailed a friend who lives over there and asked what was going on. She freaked out because she and her hubby were on their way home from seeing a movie, and her kids (high school aged) were home. She said she never dialed her home number so fast. They were fine, though they didn't know what was going on. She emailed me back once she got home and got the scoop... a car had been speeding down the road (in our quiet little subdivision) and hit a parked car (which then flipped over and into someone's yard) and then ran into a house. Yikes! I drove by the house in question this morning and it's all boarded up in the front and it looks like most of the shrubbery and front porch posts were taken out by the errant car. Craziness! Apparently there was a person in the house, but he or she wasn't injured. I think there were two people in the car. They had minor injuries and were taken to the hospital. Don't know any details other than those.

So that's about it. A little bit of everything this past weekend... might make the week ahead seem a little boring!

Extended family update...

Lots of people in my family are doing some cool things recently, now, or soon!

My brother finally secured a new job a few weeks ago and is a Warehouse Manager for a company that is ramping up operations right near his house. His wife is finishing up her certification training and will be working soon as a medical biller/coder.

My cousin, D. is having much success in a Weight Watchers at Work program that is similar to the one Hubby is doing. Way to go!

My aunt and uncle and their three sons (my NJ cousins) and one of their significant others are in Las Vegas this week. And as I type my uncle and the NJ cousins are hiking down into the Grand Canyon (with intentions to be back out this afternoon). How COOL is that?

Another cousin (the one that got married in January) and her husband just got back from what sounds like an excellent trip to Florida via the auto train.

Hubby's brother will be home from Iraq on a two-week R&R in a WEEK! My sister-in-law is so excited. We won't get to see him, but at least we can talk to him on the phone without a multi-second delay!

Our niece is finishing up her junior year of high school and looking into colleges. She wants to go into Forensics. She is one smart cookie and will shine at whatever her chosen field is, but forensics!? That rocks!

I'm sure other members of our family are doing awesome things, too... those are just a few things that I happen to know about. :)

Weekend...

Another busy weekend is winding down as I sit here watching the Oscars... not because I really care, but more because Hubby is at work trying to catch up, the kids are sound asleep, and there's nothing better on TV. I was happy to see Heath Ledger win Best Supporting Actor for his haunting performance as The Joker. He deserved it.

I had a weekend mixed with sadness and joy. Friday my brother and I drove up to Pennsylvania for a memorial service for our neighbor, who passed away last week after a battle with cancer. It was a lovely service and a fitting tribute for a wonderful woman.

We stayed with our parents on Friday night, went out to breakfast at their favorite new restaurant on Saturday morning, and then visited for a few hours with my brother's best friend from high school and his wife and son. I adore them both and hope we get to see them all again very soon.

We headed back to Virginia in blindingly bright sunshine, which I would've enjoyed a lot more if I hadn't had a splitting headache. But we made good time and were able to go out for a bite to eat with Hubby, J-Mav, and Keeper Boy before heading to [gasp!] the rink (I know... shocking!) for Keeper Boy's hockey game. My brother came with us and was suitably impressed with Keeper Boy's improvement since the last time he saw him play a few years ago.

BFF and her family came to watch Keeper Boy play, as well. Keeper Boy's team played well and won the game, beating the team that defeated them for the tournament championship LAST weekend. Good payback. After the game, we came home with an extra kid (our Godson).

Today we had awesome suite tickets for the Caps game against the Penguins. But before we headed downtown, I had to take a quick trip to the grocery store as we had no milk, bread, or toilet paper! The five of us (Godson came with us) headed downtown for lunch and the game and had a great time! Caps beat the Pens and, during the first intermission, Keeper Boy's goaltending partner and another player from their team competed in the shootout final for the other Squirt bracket... the same competition Keeper Boy and his teammate participated in in December. They won, too!

We had dinner at Rio Grande with BFF's family... great end to a great day. Now on to another week of work and school...

Weekend...

I spent a lot of time in my car this weekend. Not by design. The weekend started off with promise. Hubby and I got a babysitter and were heading downtown to the Caps game. A date! No kids! Only as this IS NoVA, we got stuck in massive traffic on 66 and missed about five minutes of the first period. Not a huge deal, but we would've rather been in our seats before the puck dropped. Anyway, we had a great time and the Caps won, which was even better.

Saturday was a day of chores around the house, and having our annual family photo taken. Both were accomplished with little fanfare. Late afternoon, J-Mav and I got in my car and headed down to BFF's house for her family's annual holiday party. Only it took us an hour to get there (should take 15 - 20 minutes). Yep, 66 again. Stupid traffic.

Hubby and Keeper Boy headed to the rink for Keeper Boy's hockey game. He was in net. I anxiously awaited updates on my phone while at the party, but none came. I had to wait until they arrived at the party later in the evening to find out that Keeper Boy had a good game and the team won 6-3. Yay! We watched the Caps game at the party and visited with friends we don't alway see very often. A good time was had by all.

This morning, Keeper Boy had a game in Maryland. J-Mav didn't want to go, so we didn't make him. He's been dragged to A LOT of hockey games in his young life, so when he really doesn't want to go, we usually don't make him. He slept in until 9am, so it's probably good that we didn't drag him out of bed at 7 to go. Keeper Boy was on door patrol for the 7-0 drubbing our boys game the team they played. Apparently it was quite the physical game, which is significant only because at the squirt level, there is still no contact allowed... that comes next year, at the pee wee level.

So good hockey weekend on both the kids level and the NHL level (at least for the Caps). Good weekend on other fronts, too. Lots of stuff done around the house and out and about (thus the spending a lot of time in my car comment). And the headache I've had off and on for the past week is off right now. So life is good.

I stil have an awful lot of stuff to wrap before Thursday when my parents arrive and I need to have the guest bedroom set up to be a bedroom and not a dumping ground for Christmas gifts! Good thing I don't have a busy week at work this week... I might have some late nights wrapping gifts!!

Up this week: hockey practice, the end of my deep water exercise class (not that I've gone the past few weeks), the shootout finals at Verizon Center for Keeper-Boy (during 1st intermission of the Caps game on Thursday night), and early Christmas with my parents. Oh and work and the rest of life, too...

And now, it's off to bed. Tomorrow's another day. Ten days until Christmas. Unvelievable!

Weekend...

Another weekend is coming to an end as I sit here flipping back and forth between Desperate Housewives and the Redskins/Cowboys game. Hubby is at said game with BFF, who has her own season tickets for her beloved Skins. How cool is she? Since the Cowboys are down 7-0 right now, I'm sure Hubby isn't thrilled about the score, but I know they're still having a great time (if they aren't popsicles by now).

The weekend started out with a Family Fun Night at Keeper Boy's school... a showing of Kung Fu Panda in the incredibly uncomfortable and acoustically-challenged cafeteria. The kids had fun and the movie was cute (what I could hear of it). We'll have to rent it again so we can really hear it. :-)

Saturday was all about laundry, homework, and chores. Dinner at a time more suitable to a nursing home so we could get Keeper Boy to the rink an hour before his 6:30 game. Keeper Boy wasn't in net, but we cheered the boys on in a great game against the visiting Jr. Hurricanes. We lost by a goal. :-(

This morning it was back to the rink for a re-match with the 'Canes. Keeper Boy's turn in net. Didn't go any better. Keeper Boy did have a highlight reel-worthy glove save, though! Our kids' first time getting swept in a weekend. :-(

After some lunch, BFF came over with her kids, N and V. After visiting for awhile, BFF and Hubby left (all bundled up like toddlers in their first snowsuits) for the Skins game, while I stayed here with the four kids (12, 10, 6, and 5). I asked them if they wanted to go see Madagascar 2. Duh. It started in 30 minutes, so we jumped in the car, went to the theatre, got the tickets and the popcorn, and were in our seats before the previews even started. The kids were great, as was the movie, and I killed a few hours. Score!

When we got home, I dialed up some pizzas and we chowed down. I even got the kids to mostly clean up the toy storm before BFF's Hubby arrived (fresh from seeing Carmen with his parents and BFF's mom) to pick them up. It was a fun evening for all the kids and they were really good. Seriously. I'm so glad they all get along so well together. :-)

And now I'm sitting here flipping channels in my fat pants. What could be better?

Weekend...

Another weekend has come and gone, and with it the end of J-Mav's soccer season. The Blue Dragon Snakes (don't ask) are officially done. Don't know what the team's record was, but I suspect if scores had been kept, we would've been winless. But that's not the point in a U6 soccer league. The point is to have fun and learn some of the fundamentals of soccer. Considering the [volunteer] coach showed up to one game all season, and was officially removed from her post before the second-to-last game, I don't think J-Mav got too far on learning the fundamentals. But at least he had fun. One outta two ain't bad!

After the game, the kids had their post-game snack and then gathered so the replacement coach could distribute the trophies and team pictures. Some of the parents also took a team photo... priceless since the post-game snack was Oreos. Can't wait to see those pictures!

So soccer is done, and we have one less thing to do on Saturdays now... at least until March, when J-Mav will start baseball.

Later on Saturday, we were off to the rink. Keeper Boy was on door patrol for Saturday's game. The kids skated and played well and won 8-0. Sunday the team played the team from Richmond... the only league team to have beaten them so far. Keeper Boy was in net. J-Mav and I weren't at the game as we were attending my Goddaughter's birthday party; however, John's cousin came down from Baltimore, so Keeper Boy still had a small cheering section. The team lost 2-1. Keeper Boy apparently played well, and he didn't seem to be down after the game, which is good.

We ended the weekend with a nice dinner at Caraba's. And now it's back to work and school for another week. Blah.

Weekend...

This was a divide-and-conquer kind of a weekend. Early Saturday morning, Hubby and Keeper Boy headed south to Richmond for two hockey games. J-Mav and I slept in a little bit and then did chores and braved the rain for his soccer game.

The soccer game was... soggy. They played in increasingly harder rain for the first half of the game and then decided to call it at half-time. At that point, I'm not sure why they didn't just let them play. They were all wet, and the parents were all wet. They don't keep score at that level, anyway. But it was what it was. J-Mav said it was very fun to play in the rain. :)

Meanwhile, in Richmond, Keeper Boy was in net for the first game of the day. Though, by all reports, the entire team didn't play all that great, they hung on and won 4-3. The entire team descended on a local TGI Fridays for a between games meal, which took almost the entire time between games. With no notice of a party of 30+ in the middle of the afternoon, they didn't have enough staff to be speedy. But, they all got fed and made it back to the rink for the second game. Keeper Boy was "door keeper" for that game. Apparently the team played even worse the second game, and they were shut out 4-0. :-( Hubby and Keeper Boy got home late last night and Keeper Boy hit the sack as his team had another game this morning and he was in net.

This game was against another local travel team and the team played really well all around this morning. Final score: 7-0. Not to take anything away from Keeper Boy's shutout, but he faced only four shots for the entire game. Good for the statistics (and good because it means the team was preventing the opposition from having any quality scoring attempts), bad for his attention span. Apparently at one intermission he went to the bench and asked if anyone had a checkerboard. Funny, Keeper Boy, real funny.
