Project Hawaii

With every fiber of my being I did not want to get on the treadmill tonight. However, I did. I am committed to wearing the clothes I WANT to wear in Hawaii this summer, and not the ones I HAVE to wear (because I can't fit into the ones I WANT to wear).

So, after spending the last two days playing at Great Wolf Lodge and walking up and down stairs all day carrying rafts of various sizes for the water slides and walking on cement, which has flared the recurring plantar faciitis pain in my left foot, I got on the treadmill.

Thankfully, today's workout was just a straight cardio walk. No speed or incline intervals.

My foot is screaming right now, but I feel awesome because I didn't make an excuse not to work out. I wanted to. But I didn't.

I love my SIZE 12 canary yellow capri pants...

And they're off!

Tomorrow morning (weather and flight permitting), my parents are off on the trip of a lifetime... a trip chosen by my dad in celebration of his 70th birthday. They will fly to Los Angeles tomorrow and board a Cunard cruise ship on Saturday to set sail on a leg of Cunard's around the world cruise. Seriously!!

Their intinerary will take them to La Haina and Honolulu, Hawaii, across the International Dateline (where they will lose a day), to Samoa, the Bay of Isles, Auckland, Wellington, and, finally, Syndney, Australia. Once in Australia, they will spend almost another two weeks there. Dad is going to do a bridge climb on the Sydney Harbor Bridge!! On their flight back, they cross the International Dateline again and have a "do-over" on a day. Guess that makes up for the day they lose going.

It really is an amazing trip... as long as they can get out of here and to LA before the ship leaves on Saturday...

SnOMG!! '11

Well, it's not as bad as last year's SnOMG!! (only 8 inches this time... much better than 3 feet), but it has still been interesting.

I have not seen my office in two days, and I'm not sure I'll get there tomorrow, either.

Hubby spent more than four hours trying to get home from an appointment yesterday, when it should've taken him just over an hour. (He was lucky... I have heard way too many stories of seven and eight-hour commutes last night.)

Last night, I manually shoveled the entire driveway and the half of the street that has not been plowed.

This afternoon, I shoveled the mountain of snow created in the middle of the street at the end of the driveway when the plow came back through this morning and plowed the same half of the street that had been previously plowed.

The good news is that my parents made it here unscathed, and as of now their flight is on time for tomorrow morning. Hubby and my dad went to Hubby's office and dug his car out of the parking lot. And J-Mav is fine today (after puking twice yesterday).

School has already been cancelled tomorrow (snow day #4), so the kids now have school on Presidents Day. This is an issue because Keeper Boy has a hockey tournament. But we'll deal with that when we come to it.

Bad news is, it's supposed to snow again tomorrow afternoon. Really?!

Land yacht to the rescue!

Hubby had an appointment in Towson, MD today. That's over an hour away on a perfect weather/traffic day. I don't know how long it took him to get up there this morning, but I know it took him more than four frustrating hours to get back. He had the company car, so he had to go back to the office to get his car. He said there were cars abandoned and stuck everywhere. There was so much traffic on the road that the plows weren't really doing a great job. At one point, it took him over and hour to go less than a mile. When he finally got to his office, he said he was never so happy to see a bathroom. I think he was pretty close to using an empty water bottle! (I don't know that for sure, but I do know he had to go really bad!!)

Anyway, once he made it to the office, he said he was going to hang there for awhile and get some work done and let some people get off the roads before he attempted to come home.

After the kids and I ate dinner, I went out to shovel the driveway, and the half of the street the plow didn't touch (which always seems to be on OUR side of the street), and the plow mountain so Hubby could get the car in the driveway when he got home. When I was almost done, Keeper Boy came out and said Hubby was on the phone and his car was stuck in the parking lot at his office. I told him we'd be there soon.

I was kind of excited to take the Suburban out in snow for the first time. :) I tore the kids away from the Caps game on TV and put some water bottles and snacks in a bag. I didn't know what we were getting into out there. I've been seeing reports on Facebook all day of people being stuck on roads for hours because of all the traffic. I also took J-Mav's bucket, as he's thrown up twice today... once early this morning, and once at dinner. I even briefly contemplated taking the dog, but then I figured I was over-reacting. The boys wanted to stay home, but I said to them, "what happens if something happens and I get stuck while I'm gone? You want to be here by yourselves without us?" They went and get their shoes and coats pretty quickly. :) We set out a little after 9pm.

Other than dodging downed trees and low-hanging limbs, and going around a few abandoned cars, we had no issue getting to Hubby's office and saw very little traffic. All the wacky traffic must be on the major roads, which I avoided. We picked him up, turned around and came home. The truck was great, and now everyone is home safe and sound. It took less than an hour. Under normal conditions, it probably would've taken 25 minutes at that time of night. So... not bad.

The snow has slowed and is supposed to stop completely within an hour or two. Let's hope. School is already cancelled for tomorrow, so I suspect I will be working from my dining room office again tomorrow while I nervously await my parents' arrival. They are driving down here tomorrow at some point because they [hopefully] have a flight out of Dulles early Friday morning for their amazing trip to Australia (via Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, and New Zealand).

Stay warm!!

Project Hawaii

Today:
- 35 min on the treadmill (incline intervals)
- 120 min shoveling heavy, wet snow

No Shake Weight today, but I think the snow shoveling covers it.

By the way... snow still sucks.

Project Hawaii

Yesterday:
- 6 min with the Shake Weight
- 30 min of yoga and balance exercises on the Wii
- 30 min on the treadmill (speed intervals)

This morning:
- 6 min with the Shake Weight
- 20 min of yoga on the Wii
- 30 min on the treadmill (cardio walk)

Seriously?!?

Kiss n Ride. IT'S NOT THAT HARD! But every morning that I drop J-Mav off at school, I am amazed by the stupidity of those dropping their kids off. It's very simple:

  • Turn onto the road that runs in front of the school and pull over toward the curb into the "queue."
  • Do not let your children out of the car anywhere but the designated area directly in front of the school... the area BETWEEN the entrance and exit to the school.
  • Do not block the entrance drive for the school as you wait... if you do, the busses cannot get into the drive to drop off children.
  • Pull ALL THE WAY up to the sign that says, "Please pull all the way up to here" (or something similar) so other cars can pull up behind you, thus maximizing number of kids who can be dropped off at one time. The helpers who are out there in the mornings are not standing there waving their arms like windmills and yelling at you to pull all the way up for their health.
  • WAIT until the car(s) in front of you pulls out and THEN pull out behind it. Do not pull out from the middle of a row of cars just because your kid got out of your car faster than someone else's kid.

It's not rocket science. Sheesh!
